Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - SEMH School - Esher

Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant, HLTA, Behaviour Mentor or Youth Worker looking for a role where you can make a genuine difference?

Reed Education is recruiting for a specialist SEMH independent school in Esher seeking a dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join their team on a permanent basis.

The school supports pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, alongside additional needs including Autism (ASC), ADHD and associated learning difficulties. Working within a therapeutic and nurturing environment, you'll play a key role in helping young people overcome barriers to learning and achieve success both academically and personally.

The Role

As an HLTA, you will work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and therapists to support pupils throughout the school day.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering lessons from pre-planned resources during teacher absence.
  • Leading small group and whole-class learning activities.
  • Supporting pupils to achieve EHCP outcomes and learning targets.
  • Delivering literacy, numeracy and emotional regulation interventions.
  • Supporting students who may display challenging behaviour using positive behaviour strategies.
  • Encouraging engagement, attendance and positive learning habits.
  • Monitoring progress and maintaining accurate records.
  • Supporting educational visits, enrichment activities and transition programmes.
  • Working collaboratively with families and external professionals.

What We're Looking For

We would like to hear from candidates who have:

  • HLTA qualification or experience leading learning within schools.
  • At least two years' experience working with children or young people.
  • Experience within SEMH, SEND, PRU, alternative provision, youth work, care or behaviour support settings.
  • Knowledge of autism, ADHD and neurodiversity.
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • A patient, resilient and proactive approach.
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
