Job Requirements/Description

Commercial Manager

Location: London / South East - flexible hybrid working with regular site travel

Remuneration: Attractive salary + car allowance + discretionary bonus + benefits including healthcare

Our client is a well-established, highly regarded, successful and profitable privately owned main contractor working with major blue-chip customers across commercial construction, distribution / logistics, industrial, refurbishment and retail projects.

With significant secured work and a strong pipeline of further opportunities, they are now seeking to strengthen their commercial team with an experienced Commercial Manager (or Senior Quantity Surveyor), reporting directly to the Commercial Director.

The precise title can reflect the successful individual's experience. We are particularly interested in commercially strong construction professionals capable of taking autonomous responsibility for multiple projects or workstreams while remaining actively involved in their commercial delivery.

Current and prospective work spans a broad range of project types and values, from multiple smaller customer projects and refurbishments through to substantial new-build and redevelopment schemes.

The Role

Responsibilities will include:

  • Commercial ownership and oversight of construction projects
  • Cost planning, budgeting, CVRs and commercial reporting
  • Procurement, tendering and subcontractor management
  • Valuations, variations and final accounts
  • Contract administration, including JCT / Design & Build / NEC
  • Value engineering and commercial risk management
  • Developing strong commercial relationships with clients and stakeholders
  • Working closely with operational and project delivery teams
  • Supporting and mentoring less experienced commercial colleagues
  • Contributing to the continued development of the commercial function as the business grows

Person Profile

The successful individual is likely to:

  • Have substantial commercial management / Quantity Surveying experience within construction
  • Have a strong main contractor background
  • Be capable of taking autonomous commercial responsibility for projects and workstreams
  • Remain sufficiently hands-on to take direct commercial ownership of projects rather than operating solely in a team-management capacity
  • Bring experience from commercial construction, industrial / logistics, distribution, refurbishment, retail or related sectors
  • Have strong procurement, cost control and contractual capability
  • Be commercially astute and credible when dealing directly with clients and senior stakeholders
  • Be comfortable supporting and mentoring junior commercial colleagues
  • Work effectively across home, project sites and periodic team / office meetings
  • Be willing to travel regularly to sites across London, the South East and elsewhere as projects require

Previous retail experience would be advantageous but is not essential. Breadth of construction experience, commercial capability and successful project delivery are more important.

This is an opportunity to join an ambitious business where the successful individual will work closely with an experienced and pragmatic Commercial Director, combining considerable autonomy with the opportunity to develop their remit as the company grows.

Remuneration

The company is open-minded and will structure an attractive salary and package according to the experience and expertise the successful individual brings. This will include a car allowance, discretionary annual bonus scheme and benefits.

Application

Please provide your CV as soon as possible.

Ideally, we would also appreciate a brief summary of your relevant project and sector experience, an indication of the remuneration you would consider and your notice period / earliest availability. You can include this information at the top of your CV.

Note: NJR advises the organisation on the basis of an exclusive consulting assignment.

Any third-party applications and correspondence will be forwarded by our client to NJR, as their retained advisor, for review and no commercial consideration will be available for unsolicited introductions.
