Director of Operations

St George the Martyr is a growing Parish Church. We are looking for an experienced operational leader who can help us build the organisation around that growth and turn vision into practical reality.

This is a senior leadership role at the heart of a vibrant, world-diverse parish in central London. Our congregation has grown, new ministries have taken root, Holy Hour has created a distinctive new space for worship and encounter, and the Borough Food Cooperative has become an increasingly important part of our relationship with the neighbourhood.

There is a great deal of life here. The question for us now is how we develop the people, systems, resources and organisational capacity needed to sustain it.

We are therefore appointing a Director of Operations / Parish Clerk to become the senior lay operational leader of St George the Martyr.

Working closely with the Rector, Churchwardens and PCC, you will take substantial responsibility for the effective day-to-day running and development of the parish. You will help turn our Mission Action Plan and wider ambitions into practical plans, strengthen our finances and governance, lead staff, improve systems, oversee significant projects and ensure that good decisions become reality.

This is not an administrative support role. We are looking for someone who enjoys making organisations work better, can see both the bigger picture and the practical detail, and is comfortable exercising real responsibility and delegated authority.

The role is unusually broad and interesting. Among other things, you will have the opportunity to:

• lead and develop our operational staff team;
• strengthen budgeting, forecasting and financial management;
• improve governance, safeguarding, risk and organisational systems;
• help shape an additional parish support role;
• develop our approach to giving, fundraising and income generation;
• support the continued development of the Borough Food Cooperative;
• help shape the future of our buildings and property, including the significant potential of our nearby St Alphege site;
• make thoughtful use of technology, automation and AI to make everyday work easier and more effective.

We do not expect you to be an expert in every part of this wide-ranging role, and you do not need to have worked in a church before. More important is a strong track record in operations or organisational leadership, good financial judgement, experience of leading people, the ability to solve problems and improve systems, and the confidence to know when to act, when to delegate and when to seek advice.

St George the Martyr stands in the heart of Borough, on a site where Christians have worshipped for more than nine centuries. Our present church dates from 1736 and carries extraordinary layers of London history, but we are not primarily a heritage project. We are a living, worshipping church, rooted in the progressive Anglican-Catholic tradition, sacramental and inclusive, with the Eucharist at the heart of our life.

The successful candidate will also hold the historic office of Parish Clerk of St George the Martyr and, subject to the appropriate requirements, may be proposed for membership of the Worshipful Company of Parish Clerks.

You will have a desire to support and develop the Christian mission and ethos of St George the Martyr and commitment to its values of Worship, Purpose, Togetherness and Justice.
